Dietary magnesium supplements, like magnesium acetyl taurate and magnesium citrate, can increase tissue magnesium levels. However, splitting high doses did not significantly enhance magnesium uptake in tissues.
Area of Science:
- Biochemistry
- Nutritional Science
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Magnesium is essential for numerous physiological functions.
- Deficiency is common due to poor diet, lifestyle, and medical conditions.
- Organic magnesium compounds show better absorption than inorganic forms.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare tissue magnesium uptake of different organic magnesium compounds (acid- vs. amino acid-bound).
- To investigate the impact of varying doses and split dosages on tissue magnesium levels.
- To assess bioavailability and tissue distribution of magnesium supplements.
Main Methods:
- Balb/c mice were orally administered three doses (45, 135, 405 mg/70 kg) of magnesium citrate, magnesium malate, magnesium acetyl taurate, and magnesium glycinate.
- A high dose (405 mg/70 kg) was also tested as two split doses (202.5 mg/70 kg) every 12 hours.
- Brain, muscle, and serum magnesium levels were measured 24 hours post-administration.
Main Results:
- Magnesium acetyl taurate increased brain magnesium levels across all tested doses.
- Magnesium citrate elevated muscle and brain magnesium levels irrespective of dose.
- Dividing high daily doses of magnesium compounds did not substantially increase tissue magnesium levels.
Conclusions:
- Different organic magnesium compounds exhibit varying effects on tissue magnesium levels.
- Magnesium acetyl taurate and magnesium citrate show promise for enhancing tissue magnesium.
- Further research is needed on long-term effects and other tissues.
