This study presents a low-cost, open-source electrocardiography (ECG) simulator using MATLAB and a circuit board. The simulator accurately generates synthetic ECG signals, proving valuable for education and research.
Area of Science:
- Biomedical Engineering
- Medical Devices
- Signal Processing
Background:
- Electrocardiography (ECG) is crucial for diagnosing cardiac conditions.
- Accurate and accessible ECG simulators are needed for education and research.
- Existing simulators may lack flexibility or be prohibitively expensive.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a low-cost, open-source ECG simulator.
- To create a flexible tool for generating synthetic, rate-dependent ECG signals.
- To provide a resource for academic research and university education in ECG analysis.
Main Methods:
- Developed a system combining MATLAB software and a dedicated circuit board for ECG signal output.
- Utilized third-order polynomials for synthetic ECG wave and spike generation.
- Calibrated polynomial coefficients using experimental ECG recordings from 22 healthy individuals (40-180 bpm).
Main Results:
- Achieved a mean correlation of 98.57% for the synthetic ECG signals compared to experimental data.
- Demonstrated superior accuracy over a widely accepted rate-dependent ECG profile (91.46% correlation).
- The simulator allows adjustable heart rate, lead signals, wave amplitudes, and distortion parameters.
Conclusions:
- The developed open-source ECG simulator is accurate and cost-effective.
- It offers a valuable tool for teaching ECG principles and for research applications.
- The availability of source code and layout files encourages further development.

ECG Interpretation of Rhythms
Components of the Electrocardiogram
The primary components of a normal ECG waveform in Normal sinus rhythm(NSR) include the P wave, PR interval, QRS complex, ST segment, T wave, and occasionally a U wave.
ECG waveforms are divided by vertical and horizontal lines at standard intervals.
The horizontal axis measures time and rate, and the vertical axis measures amplitude or voltage....
Correlation between ECG and Cardiac Cycle
A cardiac action potential originates in the SA node and spreads throughout the atria and the AV node in approximately 0.03 seconds. This results in the P wave in an ECG and triggers atrial contraction. The action potential is then briefly slowed at the AV node, allowing the atria to contract and fill the ventricles with blood before...
ECG Interpretation of Arrhythmias I: Sinus Arrhythmias
Types of Arrhythmias
Sinus Node Arrhythmias
Sinus Bradycardia: Originating from the sinoatrial (SA) node, sinus bradycardia involves slower impulses, resulting in a heart rate of less than 60 beats per minute (bpm). Causes include sleep, vagal stimulation, beta-blockers, hypothyroidism,...

Physiological Barriers
The blood endothelial barrier is the most porous of these. It allows all small ionized, un-ionized, and lipophilic molecules to pass through the endothelial lining into the interstitial space...
