Summary

Mixed dementia, including Alzheimer's disease (AD) and cerebrovascular ischemic disease (CVID), is common in the elderly. Modifiable risk factors and healthy lifestyles may prevent a significant portion of dementia cases.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Epidemiology
  • Geriatrics

Background:

  • Mixed dementia, particularly Alzheimer's disease (AD) and cerebrovascular ischemic disease (CVID), is more prevalent than pure AD in the elderly.
  • Mid-life vascular risk factors are linked to increased risk of late-onset dementia, including AD.
  • Healthy lifestyle choices like physical activity and diet show protective effects against AD.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review evidence on modifiable risk factors for Alzheimer's disease (AD).
  • To analyze potential therapeutic and preventative interventions for AD.
  • To explore the impact of lifestyle and vascular health on dementia risk.

Main Methods:

  • Review of epidemiological studies on dementia risk factors.
  • Analysis of preclinical research on AD pathogenesis.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Examination of data from interventional studies for prevention and treatment.
  • Main Results:

    • Epidemiological data suggest a potential decrease in dementia incidence and prevalence in Western countries.
    • A substantial proportion of AD cases may be preventable through lifestyle modifications.
    • Strong association between mid-life vascular health and late-onset dementia risk.

    Conclusions:

    • Modifiable risk factors present opportunities for AD prevention.
    • Lifestyle interventions, including diet and exercise, are crucial for mitigating dementia risk.
    • Further research is needed to confirm trends and optimize preventative strategies.
