Summary

This study found no link between dietary exposure to non-essential trace elements (nETE) like mercury, lead, arsenic, and cadmium, and thyroid cancer risk in French Polynesia. Fingernail concentrations of these elements also showed no association with thyroid cancer.

  • Quantify food contamination by mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), arsenic (As), and cadmium (Cd) in French Polynesia.
  • Correlate food contamination with nETE levels in Polynesian fingernails.
  • Investigate the association between nETE exposure and thyroid cancer risk.
