Background:

  • Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a potentially malignant disorder characterized by juxtaepithelial inflammatory reaction and fibrosis.
  • Chewing areca nut and betel quid are common risk factors, but individual susceptibility varies.
  • Understanding factors influencing OSMF progression is crucial for effective management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the correlation between habit duration and frequency and the clinical and histopathologic grading of OSMF.
  • To determine if these habit parameters influence the severity and staging of the disease.

Main Methods:

  • A study of 48 patients diagnosed with OSMF.
  • Detailed recording of patient history, clinical presentation, and habit history (duration and frequency).
  • Histopathological analysis of biopsy samples and correlation with established classifications (Kerr et al., Khanna and Andrade).

Main Results:

  • Majority of the 48 OSMF cases were male.
  • Mouth opening showed a direct proportion to histopathological grouping according to Khanna et al.
