    Summary

Pharmacologic interventions for chronic psychogenic polydipsia showed limited success. Propranolol effectively reduced water intake in one psychiatric patient, but other medications were ineffective in the remaining cases.

    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Endocrinology
    • Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Chronic psychogenic polydipsia is a challenging condition in psychiatric patients.
    • Standard psychiatric interventions often yield limited efficacy.

    Observation:

    • A study explored pharmacologic interventions in three patients with chronic psychogenic polydipsia.
    • Medications assessed included propranolol, captopril, and demeclocycline.

    Findings:

    • One patient experienced a significant and sustained reduction in water intake with 160 mg of propranolol.
    • Propranolol and captopril failed to improve one patient.
    • Demeclocycline did not improve serum sodium, and propranolol did not reduce water intake in a third patient.

    Implications:
