This study developed strong, swelling-resistant hydrogels using 3D printing of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and κ-carrageenan. These biocompatible materials create excellent microenvironments for cell culture, advancing tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
Area of Science:
- Biomaterials Engineering
- Tissue Engineering
- Regenerative Medicine
Background:
- Three-dimensional (3D) printing of hydrogels shows promise for biomedical applications.
- Limited availability of printable hydrogels with high strength and swelling resistance hinders progress.
Purpose of the Study:
- To fabricate robust and swelling-resistant hydrogel structures using direct ink writing (DIW).
- To investigate the potential of hybrid hydrogel inks for advanced biomedical applications.
Main Methods:
- Direct ink writing (DIW) of hybrid hydrogel inks composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and κ-carrageenan.
- Utilizing freezing and thawing cycles to induce physical crosslinking and enhance material properties.
Main Results:
- The DIW-printed hydrogels exhibited enhanced mechanical properties and swelling resistance due to physically crosslinked networks.
- Resultant hydrogels demonstrated excellent cytocompatibility, promoting cell attachment and proliferation within grid architectures.
- The materials provided suitable microenvironments for cell culture, supporting cell stretching and integration.
Conclusions:
- Physically crosslinked hybrid hydrogels offer high strength, swelling resistance, and biocompatibility.
- The DIW technique is compatible with these hydrogels for fabricating complex structures.
- These advanced hydrogels hold significant potential for tissue engineering, drug delivery, bone regeneration, and implant medicine.

Acid Strength and Molecular Structure
In the absence of any leveling effect, the acid strength of binary compounds of hydrogen with nonmetals (A) increases as the H-A bond strength decreases down a group in the periodic table. For group 17, the order of increasing acidity is HF < HCl < HBr < HI. Likewise, for group 16, the order of increasing acid strength is H2O < H2S < H2Se < H2Te. Across a row in the periodic table, the acid strength of binary hydrogen compounds increases with increasing...
Guidelines for Writing Outcome
Patient outcomes reflect the patient's response to the goal rather than what the nurse aims to achieve. Terminology should be observable and measurable to avoid the reader's interpretation. The desired outcome should be realistic and achievable in the designated care timeframe. Expected outcomes should align with adjunctive therapies. The outcome should enhance care...
Strength of Cement
For compressive strength tests, ASTM C 109-05 standards prescribe a cement-sand mix ratio of 1:2.75 and a water/cement ratio of 0.485 for making 2-inch cubes. These cubes are mixed, cast, and cured in saturated lime water at 23°C until testing. Flexural strength testing, outlined in...
