Background:

Foreign-accented speech often elicits negative perceptions.
The cognitive impact of this foreign accent bias is not well understood.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate if negative bias from foreign accent exposure affects cognitive processes.
To assess the impact on sentence comprehension, memory, and visual perception.

Main Methods:

Used electroencephalography (ERPs) and pupillometry.
Compared responses to written stimuli associated with native speakers (high/low status) and a foreign-accented speaker (high status).

Main Results:

Foreign-accented speakers were perceived less favorably than high-status native speakers but more favorably than low-status native speakers.
Physiological evidence demonstrates that foreign accent bias influences cognitive processing.

Conclusions:

Short exposure to a foreign accent can negatively impact cognitive processes.
Foreign-accented speakers may be perceived as less reliable than native speakers, even with similar social status.
Awareness of this bias is crucial for reducing discrimination in multilingual societies.
