    Summary

    Female psychiatric patients showed a higher prolactin response to thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) than males. This hormonal response did not differ between depression and other psychiatric diagnoses.

    Background:

    • The hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis and prolactin secretion are implicated in psychiatric disorders.
    • Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) stimulates both thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and prolactin release.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prolactin response to TRH in unmedicated psychiatric inpatients.
    • To explore potential correlations between prolactin response, diagnosis, depression severity, and other endocrine measures.

    Main Methods:

    • Studied 53 unmedicated psychiatric inpatients.
    • Administered TRH and measured prolactin levels.
    • Assessed TSH response and cortisol suppression by dexamethasone.

    Main Results:

    • Females exhibited a significantly greater prolactin response to TRH compared to males.
    • No significant differences in prolactin response were found between depressed patients and those with other psychiatric diagnoses.
    • The prolactin response to TRH did not correlate with depression severity, TSH response, or dexamethasone suppression resistance.

    Conclusions:

    • Gender is a significant factor in the prolactin response to TRH among psychiatric patients.
    • The prolactin response to TRH is not a reliable indicator for differentiating depression from other psychiatric conditions in this cohort.
    • Further research is needed to elucidate the role of prolactin neuroendocrine function in psychiatric illness.
