    Background:

    • Osteogenic sarcoma, a primary bone cancer, frequently metastasizes to the lungs.
    • Treatment protocols have evolved, necessitating comparative studies to evaluate efficacy.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the incidence of pulmonary metastases in osteogenic sarcoma patients treated with two different protocols.
    • To assess the effectiveness of immediate ablation and adjuvant chemotherapy versus delayed amputation and radiation.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective comparison of two patient cohorts at Groote Schuur Hospital.
    • Group 1: 28 patients treated with radiation and delayed amputation (pre-1974).
    • Group 2: 12 patients treated with immediate ablation and adjuvant chemotherapy (post-1974) including vincristine, methotrexate with leucovorin rescue, and adriamycin.
