A new low-fluoride toothpaste with nanosized sodium trimetaphosphate (TMP) significantly enhances enamel protection against demineralization. This enhanced low-fluoride option shows comparable results to high-fluoride toothpaste, particularly in subsurface lesion protection.
Area of Science:
- Dental Research
- Materials Science
- Biomineralization
Background:
- High-fluoride toothpastes (≥1,000 ppm) are effective against caries but may cause side effects with early use.
- Research is ongoing to improve the anticaries efficacy of low-fluoride (low-F) dentifrices.
- Nanosized sodium trimetaphosphate (TMP) is being investigated as an additive to enhance low-F toothpaste performance.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the in situ anti-demineralization effects of a low-F (250-ppm) dentifrice containing nanosized TMP.
- To compare the efficacy of the 250-ppm F + nanosized TMP (250F-TMPnano) formulation against placebo, 250-ppm F, and 1,100-ppm F dentifrices.
Main Methods:
- A double-blind, crossover in situ study involving 19 subjects.
- Subjects used appliances with bovine enamel blocks exposed to cariogenic challenge.
- Enamel hardness (surface and cross-sectional), mineral content (F, Ca, P), and biofilm composition were analyzed.
Main Results:
- The 250F-TMPnano dentifrice demonstrated the lowest cross-sectional hardness loss (ΔKHN) among all groups.
- Enamel F, Ca, and P concentrations were similar between the 1,100F and 250F-TMPnano groups.
- The 250F-TMPnano formulation showed comparable protective effects to 1,100F toothpaste, with superior subsurface lesion resistance.
Conclusions:
- The addition of nanosized TMP to a 250-ppm F dentifrice significantly enhances its protective effect against enamel demineralization.
- The 250F-TMPnano formulation achieves anticaries efficacy comparable to conventional 1,100-ppm F toothpaste for most parameters.
- This enhanced low-F toothpaste offers a promising alternative, particularly for its pronounced effect on subsurface enamel protection.
