    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Toxicology
    • Dermatology

    Background:

    • Canthaxanthine is a carotenoid used in dietary supplements for skin tanning.
    • Ocular deposition of canthaxanthine is a known, albeit rare, side effect.

    Observation:

    • A 50-year-old male presented with asymptomatic golden crystalline deposits in the macula of both eyes.
    • Routine ophthalmic examination revealed these unusual findings.

    Findings:

    • The patient reported a history of ingesting canthaxanthine-containing supplements (Orobronze) for cosmetic skin bronzing.
    • The macular deposits were consistent with canthaxanthine crystal deposition.

    Implications:

    • This case underscores the importance of detailed patient history in diagnosing ocular conditions.
    • It highlights the potential for systemic intake of supplements to cause visible ocular pathology.
    • Ophthalmologists should consider supplement use when evaluating patients with intraocular crystalline deposits.
