Adolescents with cognitive impairment or developmental disability (CI/DD) undergoing bariatric surgery experience similar weight loss outcomes to their peers without CI/DD. These findings suggest CI/DD should not prevent access to this beneficial weight loss surgery.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Surgery
- Developmental Pediatrics
- Obesity Medicine
Background:
- Youth with cognitive impairment or developmental disability (CI/DD) have higher obesity rates and related health issues.
- Bariatric surgery is an effective treatment for adolescent obesity.
- Limited research exists on bariatric surgery outcomes for adolescents with CI/DD.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate bariatric surgery outcomes in adolescents with CI/DD.
- To explore the relationship between cognitive functioning and weight loss post-surgery.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective study of 64 adolescents undergoing bariatric surgery (2010-2017).
- Preoperative cognitive assessments were conducted.
- CI/DD defined by IQ <80 or prior diagnosis; compared outcomes with adolescents without CI/DD.
Main Results:
- No significant differences in preoperative BMI, age, or sex between groups.
- CI/DD did not significantly impact weight loss or trajectory up to 2 years post-surgery.
- A trend towards greater weight loss over time was observed in the CI/DD group; intelligence scores did not predict weight loss.
Conclusions:
- Bariatric surgery is a viable option for adolescents with severe obesity and CI/DD.
- CI/DD should not be a contraindication for bariatric surgery.
- Further research is needed to establish long-term outcomes and best practices for this population.
