Anatomy of the Heart01:27

Anatomy of the Heart

119.5K
The human heart is made up of three layers of tissue that are surrounded by the pericardium, a membrane that protects and confines the heart. The outermost layer, closest to the pericardium, is the epicardium. The pericardial cavity separates the pericardium from the epicardium. Beneath the epicardium is the myocardium, the middle layer, and the endocardium, the innermost layer. There are four chambers of the heart: the right atrium, the right ventricle, the left atrium, and the left ventricle.

Anatomy of the Circulatory System

97.8K
The human circulatory system consists of blood, blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart, around the body, and back to the heart, and the heart itself, which acts as a central pump. The systemic circuit supplies blood to the whole body, the coronary circuit supplies blood to the heart, and the pulmonary circuit supplies blood flow between the heart and lungs.

Area of Science:

  • Abdominal Surgery
  • Diagnostic Imaging
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Lumbar hernia, a rare condition, involves protrusion of intra- or extraperitoneal tissue through flank defects.
  • Incarceration of a lumbar hernia is uncommon but constitutes a surgical emergency.

Observation:

  • A 54-year-old male presented with acute left flank pain and vomiting after coughing.
  • Physical examination revealed a tender lumbar mass near a prior stab wound site.
  • Bedside ultrasound showed a fluid-filled structure, and CT confirmed small bowel herniation and obstruction.

Findings:

  • The patient underwent emergent surgical reduction and mesh repair for the incarcerated lumbar hernia.
  • The patient recovered without complications following the surgical intervention.

Implications:

  • Incarcerated lumbar hernia is a rare diagnosis that requires prompt recognition.
  • CT scans are valuable for differentiating hernias from other pathologies.
  • Bedside ultrasound can aid in immediate reduction attempts, and obstruction necessitates urgent surgical consultation.
