Reporter Genes

Reporter genes are a type of protein-coding gene that are often tagged to a gene of interest. Once inside a target cell, reporter genes usually produce visually identifiable characteristics like fluorescence and luminescence when expressed along with the gene of interest. Thus, reporter genes “report” the presence or absence of genes of interest in an organism, determine the gene expression pattern, or track the physical location of a DNA segment or protein in the cell.

Giant cell tumors (GCTs) are rare, locally aggressive bone tumors. This case highlights successful single-stage anterior surgical removal of a GCT in the cervical spine, a rare location.

Background:

Giant cell tumors (GCTs) are typically benign but locally aggressive primary bone neoplasms.
Spinal GCTs are uncommon, with cervical spine involvement being particularly rare.

Observation:

A 31-year-old male presented with neck pain and a C4 vertebral body lytic lesion on CT.
The lesion extended posteriorly, causing vertebral collapse.

Findings:

A single-stage anterior surgical approach was utilized for complete tumor excision.
The GCT was widely curetted via the anterior approach, followed by anterior cage and plate-screw fixation for spinal fusion.

Implications:

This case demonstrates the feasibility of a single-stage anterior approach for posteriorly located cervical spine GCTs.
Successful surgical management can achieve tumor resection and spinal stability in rare GCT presentations.
