- Monolithic aerogels face production challenges due to defects and costly, lengthy processing.
- Particulate aerogels present a viable alternative, overcoming the limitations of monolithic forms.
Purpose of the Study:
- To review the emerging field of synthetic polymer aerogels in particulate form.
- To highlight advancements in polyurea, polyimide, and phenolic resin aerogels.
- To present new laboratory results on polyurea particle aerogels.
Main Methods:
- Literature review of particulate aerogels from synthetic polymers.
- Focus on powders, microgranules, and millimeter-sized beads.
- Inclusion of novel experimental data on polyurea aerogels.
Main Results:
- Synthetic polymer aerogels are successfully produced in particulate forms like powders and beads.
- Polyurea aerogels represent a significant portion of this category.
- New data demonstrates the feasibility of polyurea particle aerogel synthesis.
Conclusions:
- Particulate synthetic polymer aerogels offer a promising alternative to monolithic aerogels.
- Polyurea aerogels are a key focus within this emerging field.
- Further research and development in particulate aerogels are warranted for diverse applications.
