Ultrasonography (US)-guided percutaneous rib biopsy offers high diagnostic accuracy and a low complication rate. This technique is comparable to fluoroscopy and computed tomography (CT) for rib biopsy procedures.
Area of Science:
- Medical Imaging
- Interventional Radiology
- Diagnostic Procedures
Background:
- Percutaneous rib biopsy is crucial for diagnosing various thoracic pathologies.
- Comparing imaging modalities for percutaneous rib biopsy is essential for optimizing patient outcomes.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the diagnostic yield of image-guided percutaneous rib biopsy.
- To compare complication rates among ultrasonography (US), fluoroscopy, and computed tomography (CT) guidance.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective review of 70 percutaneous rib biopsies performed between 2007 and 2017.
- Analysis of diagnostic yield and complication rates based on imaging guidance method (US, CT, fluoroscopy).
Main Results:
- Overall diagnostic yield was 97.1%.
- US-guided biopsies (64.3% of cases) showed a diagnostic yield of 97.8%.
- Complication rate (pneumothorax) was 4.3% overall and 4.4% for US-guided biopsies.
Conclusions:
- Ultrasonography-guided percutaneous rib biopsy demonstrates high diagnostic efficacy.
- US guidance is associated with a low complication rate, comparable to CT and fluoroscopy.
