Self-Awareness and Its Effects01:21

Self-Awareness and Its Effects

299
Self-awareness is a psychological state in which the individual becomes the focal point of their attention. This inward focus transforms the self into an object of contemplation and assessment, influencing how individuals perceive their actions and their alignment with personal and societal standards.Triggers and Contexts for Self-AwarenessSelf-awareness can be activated by external stimuli that make individuals visually or audibly aware of themselves, such as mirrors, cameras, or recordings.

Altered States of Awareness01:06

Altered States of Awareness

1.0K
Altered states of consciousness represent significant deviations from one's normal mental state. These deviations can range from subtle changes in awareness to profound transformations in perception, thought processes, and sensory experiences. Altered states of consciousness can be triggered by various factors, including drug use, meditation, hypnosis, illness, or even intense fatigue.
The ingestion of substances like stimulants or hallucinogens leads to chemical alterations in the brain...

Subconsciousness and No Awareness01:15

Subconsciousness and No Awareness

681
The concept of subconscious awareness refers to the processing of information below the level of conscious thought, which significantly influences both behaviors and decisions. It is also known as waking subconscious awareness. This complex level of cognition operates without the direct awareness of the individual, facilitating rapid and simultaneous handling of multiple information streams.
An illustrative example of subconscious processing is its role in problem-solving. Often, individuals...

High-Level and Low-Level Awareness

635
Controlled processes in human consciousness represent high-alert mental states where individuals deliberately focus their attention on achieving specific goals. Controlled processes can be seen in situations like mastering new technology, where a person might become so absorbed that they ignore surrounding distractions. Such processes involve selective attention, requiring one to concentrate on particular elements of experience while disregarding others. These are governed by executive...

Global Climate Change01:50

Global Climate Change

28.8K
Throughout its ~4.5 billion year history, the Earth has experienced periods of warming and cooling. However, the current drastic increase in global temperatures is well outside of the Earth’s cyclic norms, and evidence for human-caused global climate change is compelling. Paleoclimatology, the study of ancient climate conditions, provides ample evidence for human-caused global climate change by comparing recent conditions with those in the past.

Summary

Public interest in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is low, despite rising prevalence. Google searches for COPD rank below major diseases, indicating a critical need for increased public awareness campaigns.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Digital Epidemiology
  • Health Communication

Background:

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) prevalence and mortality are increasing globally.
  • A significant number of COPD cases remain undiagnosed, potentially due to low public awareness.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantify public interest in COPD by analyzing Google web search query frequency.
  • To compare public interest in COPD with other major causes of death in high-income countries.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized Google Trends to collect relative search volume data for "chronic obstructive pulmonary disease" from 2004 to 2018.
  • Compared COPD search volume against nine major causes of death identified by the World Health Organization.

Main Results:

  • "Diabetes mellitus", "stroke", and "breast cancer" showed the highest relative search volumes.
  • "Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease" ranked eighth, indicating significantly lower public interest.
  • COPD search volume exhibited seasonal variations, with peaks in Q1 and Q4.

Conclusions:

  • Public interest in COPD is substantially under-represented compared to its real-world prevalence and impact.
  • There is an urgent need to enhance public awareness and understanding of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
