Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Health Services Research

Background:

  • Rising demand for dermatology services necessitates efficient clinic operations.
  • Current evidence guiding dermatological consultation time allocation is limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze dermatology consultation lengths.
  • To provide evidence-based time recommendations for optimizing clinic efficiency.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of 607 dermatology consultations.
  • Involved 23 clinicians across various grades.
  • Examined factors influencing consultation duration.

Main Results:

  • Consultation length depends on clinician grade, patient type (new vs. follow-up), and diagnosis.
  • Median consultation times for general dermatological conditions and suspected skin tumors were 16.5 and 15.5 minutes, respectively.
  • New patient consultations were significantly longer than follow-up cases.

Conclusions:

  • Recommend allocating 25 minutes for new patient consultations with general dermatological conditions.
  • Suggest allocating 15 minutes for follow-up consultations.
  • Advocate for similar analyses in other medical specialties to develop efficient clinic models.
