A pulse is a short burst of radio waves distributed over a range of frequencies that simultaneously excites all the nuclei in the sample. Upon passing a radio frequency pulse along the x-axis, the nuclei absorb energy corresponding to their Larmor frequencies and achieve resonance. This shifts the net magnetization vector from the z-axis toward the transverse plane. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a feasible treatment for benign thyroid nodules, showing significant volume reduction over 5 years. Biopsies confirmed no malignant changes or damage to surrounding thyroid tissue.

  • Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is explored for benign thyroid nodules.
  • Concerns exist regarding cytomorphological changes and potential malignant transformation post-RFA.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the clinical feasibility of RFA for benign thyroid nodules.
  • To evaluate cytomorphological alterations and malignant transformation using biopsy after RFA.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective data collection from April 2008 to June 2013.
  • Core needle biopsy (CNB) performed on 16 RFA-treated benign thyroid nodules.
  • Statistical analysis using linear mixed models to compare patient parameters.

Main Results:

  • No atypical cells or neoplastic transformation found in peripheral treated nodule portions via CNB.
  • RFA did not affect the thyroid capsule or adjacent thyroid tissue.
  • Histopathology showed 81.2% acellular hyalinization; mean nodule volume reduced by 81.3% over 5 years.

Conclusions:

  • RFA is a technically feasible treatment for benign thyroid nodules.
  • RFA demonstrated no carcinogenic effect.
  • No tissue damage observed in normal thyroid tissue adjacent to the RFA-treated zone.
