Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) treatments significantly reduced perioperative pain, nausea, and anxiety compared to standard care. These findings suggest CAM therapies offer valuable adjunctive benefits for surgical patients.

Background:

  • Perioperative symptoms like pain, nausea, and anxiety are frequently undertreated.
  • A general surgery department integrated Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) to address these challenges.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of CAM treatments on perioperative symptoms.
  • To assess the effectiveness of CAM within a standard of care (SOC) framework.

Main Methods:

  • A pragmatic trial allocated patients (≥18 years) to SOC with or without CAM (Acupuncture, Reflexology, Guided Imagery).
  • Symptom severity was measured using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS).
  • Adverse effects of CAM were monitored.

Main Results:

  • The CAM group (n=916) showed significantly greater symptom reduction than controls (n=211).
  • Mean VAS reduction for pain: -2.17 (CAM) vs -0.29 (control); nausea: -1.2 (CAM) vs -0.3 (control); anxiety: -2.23 (CAM) vs -0.03 (control).
  • Acupuncture was particularly effective for nausea; no significant adverse events were reported.

Conclusions:

  • CAM treatments offer additional relief for perioperative symptoms beyond SOC.
  • Further large-scale randomized controlled trials with extended follow-up are recommended to validate these benefits.
