Pneumocytoma, a rare benign lung tumor, can present as a solitary pulmonary nodule. Surgical resection confirmed pneumocytoma in a patient with a history of tuberculosis, with no recurrence observed after 41 months.
Area of Science:
- Pulmonology
- Surgical Oncology
- Pathology
Background:
- Pneumocytoma is a rare, benign lung tumor often presenting as a solitary pulmonary nodule.
- This case involves a 69-year-old female with a history of tuberculosis treatment.
Observation:
- A round mass was detected on chest radiography and confirmed as a lesion on thoracic computed tomography.
- Diagnostic procedures including fiberoptic bronchoscopy, CT-guided fine-needle aspiration cytology, and intraoperative frozen section were inconclusive.
Findings:
- Wedge resection via minithoracotomy was performed.
- Pathologic examination definitively diagnosed the lesion as pneumocytoma.
- The patient received no adjuvant chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
Implications:
- This case highlights the diagnostic challenges of pneumocytoma, especially when initial investigations are inconclusive.
- Surgical resection proved effective, with no recurrence noted during a 41-month follow-up period.
- Emphasizes the importance of surgical pathology for definitive diagnosis and management of suspected lung neoplasms.

Pulmonary Tuberculosis I
Causative Organism
The primary infectious agent causing tuberculosis is Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a slow-growing, acid-fast, aerobic rod that exhibits sensitivity to heat and ultraviolet light. Instances of Mycobacterium bovis and Mycobacterium avium contributing to the development of TB infection are rare.
