Summary

Background:

  • Thyroid incidentalomas are frequently encountered in clinical practice.
  • Limited data exists on the risk of thyroid cancer in patients with pre-existing non-thyroidal cancers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the frequency of thyroid malignancy in incidental thyroid nodules found in patients with a history of non-thyroid cancer.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective evaluation of 287 thyroid nodules from 161 patients with non-thyroid cancer history (2008-2014).
  • Analysis of fine needle aspiration biopsy results and surgical histopathology for malignancy.

Main Results:

  • 69.7% of nodules were benign by cytology.
  • Thyroid cancer was confirmed in 3 surgically removed nodules (11.1% of operated nodules, excluding metastasis and incidental findings).
  • Metastasis from non-thyroid cancer to the thyroid occurred in 4 nodules.

Conclusions:

  • The risk of thyroid malignancy in incidental thyroid nodules appears not significantly elevated in patients with non-thyroid cancer.
  • A nodule-based assessment suggests a low cancer risk in this population.
