Occupational and physical therapists are familiar with and have a positive attitude toward evidence-based practice (EBP). However, barriers like time and access limit their current engagement in EBP.

Area of Science:

  • Rehabilitation Sciences
  • Health Professions Education

Background:

  • Evidence-based practice (EBP) is crucial in healthcare.
  • Limited research exists on occupational and physical therapists' perceptions of EBP.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate occupational and physical therapists' perceptions of EBP.
  • To identify barriers affecting EBP implementation in clinical settings.

Main Methods:

  • A survey study was conducted with practicing therapists in a Midwest U.S. healthcare system.
  • A questionnaire developed by Rubin et al. was administered to 47 participants.
  • Therapists' familiarity, attitude, and engagement with EBP were assessed.

Main Results:

  • Therapists reported high familiarity (3.82) and positive attitudes (3.73) toward EBP.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Current engagement in EBP was lower (2.93).
  • Key barriers included time, access, and practice setting constraints.
  • Conclusions:

    • Therapists intend to use EBP but face practical challenges.
    • Recommendations are provided for clinical practice and educational programs to enhance EBP integration.
