Genetic variations in the MBL2 gene are linked to pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), especially in cases of PANDAS (pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections). These findings suggest a role for MBL2 genotypes in the development of PANDAS-OCD.
Area of Science:
- Immunogenetics
- Pediatric Psychiatry
Background:
- Pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections (PANDAS) are a subtype of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) with unknown mechanisms.
- Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) plays a crucial role in the innate immune system.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between MBL2 gene polymorphisms and pediatric OCD, specifically in PANDAS, PANDAS-Variant, and non-PANDAS subgroups.
Main Methods:
- A case-control study involving 102 pediatric OCD patients and 60 healthy controls.
- Analysis of MBL2 gene polymorphisms at codons 52, 54, and 57.
Main Results:
- MBL2 codon 54 polymorphism and any MBL2 variant were more frequent in the OCD group compared to controls (OR=2.97 and OR=2.66, respectively).
- Regression analysis revealed a 14.50-fold increased frequency of any MBL2 variant in the PANDAS subgroup versus the non-PANDAS subgroup.
Conclusions:
- The study supports a significant association between MBL2 genotypes and pediatric OCD.
- These findings highlight the potential role of MBL2 in PANDAS-OCD.
