Reduced physical function and polypharmacy (PPha) are strongly linked in older adults. Better physical function is associated with less PPha, and PPha is linked to poorer physical function, highlighting a bidirectional relationship.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Geriatric Medicine
- Public Health
Background:
- Aging populations face challenges with reduced physical function and polypharmacy (PPha).
- Existing research indicates a potential link between physical function and PPha in older adults.
- Demographic trends predict an increase in these age-related issues.
Purpose of the Study:
- To systematically review and analyze the relationship between physical function and PPha in older adults.
- To summarize recent scientific evidence on the bidirectional association between these factors.
- To inform clinicians about the interplay between physical function and medication use in the elderly.
Main Methods:
- Conducted a systematic literature search of MEDLINE and Embase up to October 2018.
- Included English-language observational studies and trials examining PPha and physical function in older adults.
- Two independent investigators extracted data and assessed study quality.
Main Results:
- Eighteen observational studies met the inclusion criteria.
- Most studies (8/9) found better physical function associated with lower risk of PPha.
- Most studies (9/10) indicated PPha is associated with reduced physical function.
Conclusions:
- A strong bidirectional association exists between physical function and PPha in older adults.
- Clinicians should recognize this significant relationship in geriatric care.
- Variability in definitions and analysis methods were noted limitations.
