A novel rearranged clerodane diterpenoid, tinocrispide, was discovered in Tinospora crispa stems. This study also reports new compounds and revises existing data for Tinospora crispa chemical constituents.
Area of Science:
- Phytochemistry
- Natural Products Chemistry
- Organic Chemistry
Background:
- Tinospora crispa is a medicinal plant with a rich history of traditional use.
- The chemical constituents of Tinospora crispa have been extensively studied, but new compounds continue to be discovered.
- Clerodane diterpenoids are a significant class of natural products found in Tinospora species.
Purpose of the Study:
- To isolate and characterize new and known chemical constituents from the stems of Tinospora crispa.
- To elucidate the structures of isolated compounds using spectroscopic methods.
- To contribute to the phytochemical knowledge of Tinospora crispa.
Main Methods:
- Phytochemical investigation involving extraction and isolation techniques.
- Structure elucidation using 1D and 2D Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.
- High-Resolution Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (HRESIMS) for structural confirmation.
Main Results:
- Isolation of a new rearranged clerodane diterpenoid, tinocrispide.
- Identification of thirteen known compounds, including eight clerodane diterpenoids.
- First-time reporting of baenzigeride A, (6S, 9R)-vomifoliol, and steponine from Tinospora crispa.
- Revision of the 13C NMR data for borapetol A.
Conclusions:
- The chemical diversity of Tinospora crispa stems has been expanded with the discovery of tinocrispide.
- This study enhances the understanding of clerodane diterpenoids in Tinospora species.
- The revised NMR data provides a more accurate reference for future studies on borapetol A.
