Idiopathic Thyroid Abscess - A Rare Occurrence.

Observation:

• A case study involving a 22-year-old woman presenting with neck swelling and low-grade fever.
• Imaging (ultrasound and CT) identified a heterogeneous mass in the left thyroid lobe.
• Fine needle aspiration confirmed an abscess, with Staphylococcus aureus identified on culture.

Findings:

• The patient was successfully treated with intravenous and oral amoxicillin-clavulanate.
• Surgical intervention was not required for this thyroid abscess case.
• Staphylococcus aureus was the causative pathogen identified in the thyroid abscess.

Implications:

• This case underscores the importance of differentiating thyroid abscesses from other neck masses like branchial cleft cysts or lymphadenitis.
