Developing alternate models for long-term care: the "family model" and the therapeutic community

This paper examines an alternative model for a long-term care facility for the mentally ill. Termed the "family model," it is based upon the assumption that the primary function of a psychiatric environment is the delivery of services in loco familias. The difficulties in integrating the family model and the traditional medical model are examined.
