Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop an algorithm for subgrouping primary care sciatica patients.

  • To facilitate early referral for investigations and specialist opinion.

  • Analysis of a UK NHS cohort study (n=429) of primary care sciatica patients.
  • Identification of factors associated with specialist referral from literature and clinical opinion.
  • Calculation of fast-track referral rates, sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values.

  • An algorithm was developed, allocating patients into 3 groups based on clinical characteristics and prognosis risk.

Conclusions:

  • Ongoing research will assess the algorithm's impact on symptom resolution through linked care pathways.
