Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of CO2 laser treatment for diverse dermatological conditions in outpatients.
  • To assess the utility of specific CO2 laser systems in clinical practice.

Main Methods:

  • A total of 47 outpatients received a single CO2 laser treatment using Sharplan and Yoshida Opelaser systems.
  • The laser was primarily used in defocused mode at 10 watts, with local anesthesia (1% lignocaine HCL).
  • Patients were treated for conditions including warts, lichen simplex chronicus, prurigo nodularis, psoriasis, solar keratosis, ingrowing toenail, Bowen's disease, infected callosity, lichen amyloidosis, and pyogenic granuloma.

  • Significant improvement or cure was observed in most cases: 14/30 warts cured, 16/30 improved; 4/5 lichen simplex chronicus cured.

  • CO2 laser treatment failed in 2 patients with pyogenic granuloma. Common side effects included hypopigmentation (62%), mild pain (11%), scarring (11%), excess granulation tissue (11%), and infection (2%).

  • The study highlights the versatility of CO2 lasers in managing various skin issues, despite notable side effects like hypopigmentation.
