Breast reconstruction after risk-reducing mastectomy in BRCA mutation carriers

Background:

• Breast reconstruction is a viable option for BRCA1/2 mutation carriers undergoing risk-reducing mastectomy (RRM).

Purpose of the Study:

• To evaluate patient characteristics influencing the decision for breast reconstruction concurrent with risk-reducing mastectomy (RRM) in BRCA1/2 mutation carriers.
• To compare the rates of nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM) between patients who underwent RRM with and without breast reconstruction.

• Retrospective analysis of 46 patients with BRCA1/2 mutations who underwent RRM between July 2011 and December 2017.

• The presence of a current breast cancer diagnosis may influence the decision for immediate breast reconstruction during RRM in BRCA1/2 mutation carriers.
• Patients opting for RRM with breast reconstruction showed a significant preference for NSM over skin-sparing mastectomy.
