This study introduces the Ilizarov-type external fixator as a novel solution for severe panfacial fractures. This method offers a less invasive approach compared to traditional internal fixation, successfully treating complex facial bone fractures.
Area of Science:
- Orthopedic Surgery
- Maxillofacial Trauma
- Biomedical Engineering
Background:
- Internal plate fixation is standard for facial fractures but challenging with severe comminution.
- Achieving occlusal stability and preventing infection are key concerns with internal fixation.
- Avascular bone fragments and implants increase infection risk in severe facial fractures.
Observation:
- Internal fixation is difficult with severely comminuted facial fractures due to fragment management.
- Internal fixation carries infection risks from foreign bodies and avascular bone fragments.
Findings:
- External fixation using an Ilizarov-type external fixator was successfully employed for a severe panfacial fracture.
- The Ilizarov-type external fixator offers low invasiveness, adaptability, adjustability, and cost-effectiveness.
Implications:
- Ilizarov-type external fixation presents a viable, less invasive treatment option for severe panfacial fractures.
- This technique may reduce complications associated with internal fixation in complex facial trauma.
- Further research can explore the broader application of Ilizarov-type fixators in maxillofacial trauma.

Fixation and Sectioning
The simplest type of preparation is the wet mount, in which the specimen is placed in a drop of liquid on the slide. A liquid specimen can be directly deposited on the slide using a dropper. Solid specimens, such as skin scraping, can be placed on the slide before adding a drop of liquid to prepare the wet mount. Sometimes the liquid is simply water, but stains are often added...

Sampling Methods: Sample Types
Solid samples include a variety of substances, such as sediments from water bodies, soil, metals, and biological tissues. Two standard methods for extracting sediments from water bodies are grab sampling and piston coring. Grab sampling involves using a device to collect a discrete sediment sample from the bottom of a water body with minimal disturbance. Grab samples do not always represent the entire area due to...
