Central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) is a benign jaw lesion. This case study shows successful treatment of maxillary CGCG using intralesional corticosteroids and bone-strengthening medications.
Area of Science:
- Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
- Pediatric Dentistry
- Endocrinology
Background:
- Central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) is a benign bone lesion in the head and neck.
- Maxillary CGCG can cause significant expansion due to bone structure.
- Surgical excision is standard but can be disfiguring, necessitating alternative treatments.
Observation:
- A 12-year-old female presented with CGCG of the left maxilla.
- The lesion exhibited aggressive and locally destructive potential.
- Maxillary location posed challenges for conservative management.
Findings:
- Treatment involved 40 doses of intralesional triamcinolone acetonide.
- Combined therapy included alendronate sodium and calcium carbonate.
- 12-year follow-up showed sustained clinical and imaging improvement.
Implications:
- Intralesional corticosteroid injections offer a viable alternative to surgery for maxillary CGCG.
- Combination therapy may enhance bone healing and lesion stabilization.
- This approach provides a less disfiguring option for pediatric patients with aggressive CGCG.

RNA is the Missing Link Between DNA and Proteins
In the early 1900s, scientists discovered that DNA stores all the information needed for cellular functions and that proteins perform most of these functions. However, the mechanisms of converting genetic information into functional proteins remained unknown for many years. Initially, it was believed that a single gene is...
