Background:

  • Total rhinectomy is a rare surgical procedure for advanced nasal malignancies.
  • Existing literature on total rhinectomy outcomes, including recurrence and metastasis, presents conflicting results.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the prognosis of patients who underwent total rhinectomy for malignant neoplasia at our institution.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of patients undergoing total rhinectomy between January 2013 and September 2018.
  • Data collected from patients treated by the Head and Neck surgical team.

Main Results:

  • Ten patients (2 male, 8 female, mean age 71.6) were included.
  • Most cases (8/10) involved nasal skin carcinomas, predominantly squamous cell carcinoma (7/10).
  • Six patients experienced regional metastasis (median 14.3 months); overall mortality was 50%, disease-specific mortality 30% (median follow-up 45.7 months).

Conclusions:

  • Total rhinectomy for advanced nasal malignancies is linked to significant overall and disease-specific mortality.
  • The findings underscore the grave prognosis for patients with advanced nasal cancers requiring this radical surgery.
