    Summary

A rare primary angiosarcoma in the left atrium, associated with rheumatic heart disease, was found during autopsy. This endocardial tumor, identified two years post-valvotomy, had spread to the brain.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiovascular Pathology
    • Oncology
    • Cardiac Surgery

    Background:

    • Chronic rheumatic valvulitis can predispose to cardiac complications.
    • Primary cardiac tumors are rare, with angiosarcoma being an aggressive subtype.
    • Surgical interventions like valvotomy are performed for rheumatic heart disease.

    Observation:

    • An unusual case of primary angiosarcoma originating in the left atrium is presented.
    • The tumor was discovered incidentally at autopsy.
    • The patient had a history of chronic rheumatic valvulitis and prior valvotomy procedures.

    Findings:

    • The angiosarcoma was confined to the endocardium of the left atrium.
    • Metastasis of the tumor to the brain was observed.
    • The tumor was detected two years after the patient's second valvotomy.

    Implications:

    • This case highlights the potential for rare cardiac malignancies in patients with valvular heart disease.
    • The endocardial location and brain metastasis underscore the aggressive nature of primary cardiac angiosarcoma.
    • Understanding such rare presentations is crucial for diagnosis and management in cardiovascular oncology.
