Structural Joints: Cartilaginous Joints

3.9K
As the name indicates, at a cartilaginous joint, the adjacent bones are united by cartilage, a tough but flexible type of connective tissue. Unlike synovial joints, these types of joints lack a joint cavity and involve bones joined together by either hyaline cartilage or fibrocartilage.
There are two types of cartilaginous joints:
Synchondrosis
A synchondrosis ("joined by cartilage") is a cartilaginous joint where bones are connected by hyaline cartilage. Synchondrosis may be temporary...

Area of Science:

  • Medical imaging
  • Pathology
  • Rare diseases

Background:

  • Suprapubic cartilaginous cysts are exceptionally rare, with limited documented cases in medical literature.
  • Diagnosis can be challenging due to subtle or absent clinical signs and insufficient disease information.

Observation:

  • A case of a 74-year-old female patient with a suprapubic cartilaginous cyst was observed.
  • The diagnosis was confirmed through a combination of biopsy, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Findings:

  • The study confirmed the diagnosis of a suprapubic cartilaginous cyst in the observed patient.
  • Multimodal imaging (ultrasound, CT, MRI) and histopathological analysis were crucial for definitive diagnosis.

Implications:

  • This case underscores the need for high clinical suspicion and comprehensive diagnostic workup for rare suprapubic lesions.
  • Accurate diagnosis of suprapubic cartilaginous cysts is essential for appropriate patient management and understanding of this rare condition.
