Burn Injuries01:22

Burn Injuries

4.2K
Burn injuries occur when the skin and underlying tissues are damaged due to exposure to heat, electricity, chemicals, radiation, or friction. They can vary in severity, from minor superficial burns to severe deep burns that can be life-threatening.
The damage results in the death of skin cells, which can lead to a massive loss of fluid. Dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and renal and circulatory failure follow, which can be fatal. Burn patients are treated with intravenous fluids to offset...

Impression Management Techniques I: Managing Appearances

202
Appearance is a multidimensional aspect of self-presentation that encompasses observable attributes such as clothing, grooming, speech, and nonverbal behavior. These elements are often strategically managed to align with socially constructed expectations in different settings. For instance, individuals tailor their appearance during job interviews, social gatherings, or athletic events to meet the perceived norms of those environments.Contextual Adaptation and Social SignalsThe research...

Phases of Wound Repair01:28

Phases of Wound Repair

7.9K
Following injury, the integrity of the injured tissues must be reestablished. For example, in skin tissue, wound repair involves coordination among resident skin cells, blood mononuclear cells, extracellular matrix, growth factors, and cytokines to complete the healing cascade.
Formation of Blood Clot
In case of deep injuries, trauma to blood vessels results in blood loss. In the meantime, phospholipids released from the ruptured endothelial cellular membrane are converted into arachidonic...

Management of Insomnia01:19

Management of Insomnia

555
The sleep cycle, an integral part of human health, consists of several stages with distinct characteristics and functions. It begins with a transition from wakefulness to sleep, known as the light sleep phase, followed by the restorative deep sleep phase, essential for physical recovery and growth. The cycle concludes with the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) phase, characterized by high brain activity and vivid dreaming. Insomnia, a prevalent sleep disorder, involves difficulty falling asleep, staying...

Managing Impressions01:19

Managing Impressions

152
Impression management encompasses individuals' deliberate efforts to shape how others perceive them during social interactions. This behavior is often employed to conform to social norms, secure approval, or pursue specific goals. While it involves selective self-presentation, it is not necessarily deceptive; individuals frequently present authentic aspects of themselves that align with situational demands.Common strategies include:Ingratiation: where individuals use flattery or agreeableness...

Summary

Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are a significant risk for burn patients, increasing complications and mortality. Newer topical treatments are being compared to silver sulfadiazine cream (SSD) for burn wound care.

Area of Science:

  • Burn care research
  • Infectious disease in clinical settings
  • Wound healing and management

Background:

  • Cutaneous burns pose significant global health challenges, leading to high morbidity and mortality.
  • Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) affect over 7.9% of burn patients, prolonging hospital stays and increasing mortality risk.
  • Skin and soft tissue infections are the most common HAIs in burn patients, followed by respiratory, bloodstream, and urinary tract infections.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review and compare the efficacy of topical antiseptics and honey against silver sulfadiazine cream (SSD) in managing burn wound infections.
  • To evaluate the impact of these treatments on burn wound healing.
  • To provide an evidence-based update on topical burn wound management strategies.

  • Systematic review and meta-analysis of recent studies comparing topical antiseptics or honey with SSD.
  • Analysis of patient data regarding infection rates, wound healing times, and adverse events.
  • Assessment of burn severity (e.g., total body surface area) and patient comorbidities as risk factors for HAIs.

Main Results:

  • Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are prevalent in burn patients, with risk increasing with burn size (≥ 5% TBSA).
  • Factors like inhalation injury, flame burns, older age, and comorbidities elevate HAI risk.
  • Silver sulfadiazine cream (SSD) has historically improved outcomes, but newer topical agents are under investigation.

Conclusions:

  • The study highlights the ongoing challenge of HAIs in burn care and the need for effective infection control measures.
  • Recent research focuses on alternative topical treatments like antiseptics and honey to improve burn wound healing and reduce infection rates.
  • Comparative reviews are crucial for guiding clinical practice and optimizing patient outcomes in burn management.
