Mindfulness, paying attention to the present, shows a small link to healthier habits like exercise and sleep. This connection is stronger for specific behaviors and in certain groups, like psychiatric patients.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Behavioral Science
- Health Science
Background:
- Mindfulness involves present-moment awareness and acceptance.
- Mindfulness is linked to various health-related behaviors.
- Existing research on mindfulness and health behaviors needs synthesis.
Purpose of the Study:
- To conduct a meta-analytic review of trait mindfulness and health behaviors.
- To examine moderators influencing the mindfulness-health behavior relationship.
- To evaluate the strength and consistency of these associations.
Main Methods:
- A meta-analytic review of 125 independent samples (N=31,697).
- Multilevel random-effects and mixed-effects models were employed.
- Analysis focused on associations and moderator effects.
Main Results:
- A small positive association (r=0.08) between trait mindfulness and aggregated health behaviors.
- Positive links with physical activity, healthy eating, and sleep (r=0.08-0.14).
- Negative association with alcohol use (r=-0.06); stronger effects for health-promoting behaviors and in psychiatric samples.
Conclusions:
- Trait mindfulness has a small but significant association with health behaviors.
- The relationship is moderated by specific behaviors and populations.
- Individual mindfulness does not always translate to consistent health behaviors but shows potential under certain conditions.
