Ethics in Research01:56

Ethics in Research

24.0K
Today, scientists agree that good research is ethical in nature and is guided by a basic respect for human dignity and safety. However, this has not always been the case. Modern researchers must demonstrate that the research they perform is ethically sound.

Ethical Issues

Nurses are essential in patient care, upholding the ethical principles of their profession and effectively navigating ethical dilemmas. Neglecting ethical issues can lead to inadequate patient care, compromised therapeutic relationships, and moral distress among healthcare workers.

Humans are very diverse and although we share many similarities, we also have many differences. The social groups we belong to help form our identities (Tajfel, 1974). These differences may be difficult for some people to reconcile, which may lead to prejudice toward people who are different. Prejudice is a negative attitude and feeling toward an individual based solely on one’s membership in a particular social group (Allport, 1954; Brown, 2010). Prejudice is common against people who...

Ethics and Bioethics

1.5K
Ethics is a philosophical study of moral actions. Ethics attempts to determine what is valuable for individuals and society. It examines the rational justification of moral judgments and analyzes what is morally just, fair, and right. Bioethics is a sub-discipline of applied ethics that analyzes the philosophical, social, and legal issues in life sciences and medicine. Ethical theories serve as a foundation for decision-making and represent the viewpoints from which people seek direction. They...

Criticisms of the Evolutionary Perspective

In a study where individuals posing as strangers offered compliments and proposed casual sex to students, the responses differed significantly based on gender. Not a single woman accepted the proposal, while 70% of the men agreed. This outcome provides a useful scenario to explore through the lens of evolutionary psychology and social learning theory, highlighting the diverse perspectives on human sexual behaviors.
Evolutionary psychology provides one explanation for these findings, suggesting...

Summary

Virtual reality (VR) offers unique ways to study racial discrimination stress. Participants in VR discrimination scenarios reported higher stress, but VR intensity was comparable to other methods, and participants felt ethically treated.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Human-Computer Interaction
  • Ethics

Background:

  • Virtual reality (VR) presents novel opportunities for studying stress responses.
  • Ethical considerations of using VR for sensitive topics like racial discrimination require thorough examination.
  • Previous research has not fully explored the ethical landscape of VR in discrimination studies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the scientific benefits and risks of employing VR in racial discrimination research.
  • To investigate participant stress levels and perceived intensity of VR experiences compared to traditional methods.
  • To assess the ethical treatment and gather participant perspectives on VR-based discrimination research.

Main Methods:

  • A VR experiment involving 130 participants of color was conducted.
  • Participants were assigned to either a racial discrimination or a daily hassle VR condition.
  • Data collected included stress recall, perceived VR intensity, and ethical treatment feedback.

Main Results:

  • Participants exposed to the racial discrimination VR simulation reported significantly greater stress.
  • No significant differences were found in perceived VR experience intensity compared to traditional methods (vignettes, videos).
  • Participants generally reported feeling ethically treated and provided insights into VR research risks and benefits.

Conclusions:

  • VR can be a valuable tool for examining psychological responses to racial discrimination.
  • Ethical considerations must be carefully managed when using VR for sensitive research.
  • Further research and ethical guidelines are needed for VR applications in discrimination studies.
