Summary

People with essential tremor (ET) can adapt their walking patterns, but show impairments in the timing of their steps. This study reveals preserved locomotor adaptation despite cerebellar involvement in ET.

Background:

  • Essential tremor (ET) is a common movement disorder with motor deficits resembling cerebellar dysfunction.
  • Previous research on ET has focused on reaching adaptation, leaving gait adaptation effects unknown.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate and contrast locomotor adaptation in individuals with and without ET.
  • To determine if ET impairs the ability to adapt gait patterns.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study comparing individuals with ET (n=14) and healthy controls (n=12).
  • Participants walked on a split-belt treadmill to assess adaptation, transfer, readaptation, and deadaptation.
  • Step length asymmetry and its spatial, temporal, and velocity contributions were analyzed.

  • Individuals with ET demonstrated preserved abilities in adapting to, storing, and transferring new walking patterns.

Conclusions:

  • Locomotor adaptation is a viable mechanism for teaching new gait patterns to individuals with ET, despite probable cerebellar involvement.
  • Individuals with ET exhibit impairments in modulating step timing during gait, impacting temporal aspects of walking.
