Background:

  • The scrapie agent, responsible for a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy, is composed of a protein (PrPSc) and potentially an informational molecule.
  • Distinct scrapie strains suggest the presence of genetic material, possibly a nucleic acid encoding infectivity.
  • The normal prion protein (PrPC) and the disease-associated PrPSc isoform likely arise from post-translational modifications of a single prion protein (PrP) gene product.
