Background:

  • The HeartMate III (HM3) left ventricular assist device (LVAD) is a fully magnetically levitated pump.
  • It has received CE Mark and FDA approval, with prior studies reporting no device-related complications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the real-life, medium-term outcomes of the HM3 LVAD.
  • To assess the performance of the HM3 LVAD in a consecutive patient cohort.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective review of prospectively collected data was performed.
  • 33 consecutive patients implanted with an HM3 LVAD between November 2014 and October 2018 were analyzed.

  • 31 of 33 patients survived to the census date, with 11 undergoing transplantation.
  • No instances of pump thrombosis were reported; three cases of clot ingestion occurred.
  • The median duration of HM3 support was 196 days.
