Cross-Sectional Research01:50

Cross-Sectional Research

12.4K
In cross-sectional research, a researcher compares multiple segments of the population at the same time. If they were interested in people's dietary habits, the researcher might directly compare different groups of people by age. Instead of following a group of people for 20 years to see how their dietary habits changed from decade to decade, the researcher would study a group of 20-year-old individuals and compare them to a group of 30-year-old individuals and a group of 40-year-old...

Profile Leveling and Cross Sections01:26

Profile Leveling and Cross Sections

1.6K
Profile leveling and cross-sections are surveying methods used to determine and document terrain elevations for infrastructure projects such as highways, railroads, canals, and pipelines. These methods provide data for earthwork planning and alignment of proposed routes.  Profile leveling involves measuring elevations along a fixed line to create a vertical terrain profile. A surveyor sets up a leveling instrument at the benchmark (BM) and records a backsight (BS) to determine the...

Spinal Cord: Cross-sectional Anatomy

4.4K
The cross-sectional anatomy of the spinal cord offers a detailed view of its complex structure and function within the central nervous system. At the core of the spinal cord lies the gray matter, characterized by its butterfly or "H"-shaped appearance in cross-section. This central region is enveloped by white matter, with the overall structure divided into symmetrical halves by the dorsal median sulcus and the ventral median fissure.

Crossing Over01:34

Crossing Over

169.4K
Unlike mitosis, meiosis aims for genetic diversity in its creation of haploid gametes. Dividing germ cells first begin this process in prophase I, where each chromosome—replicated in S phase—is now composed of two sister chromatids (identical copies) joined centrally.
The homologous pairs of sister chromosomes—one from the maternal and one from the paternal genome—then begin to align alongside each other lengthwise, matching corresponding DNA positions in a process...

Crossing Over01:30

Crossing Over

6.3K
Crossing over is the exchange of genetic information between homologous chromosomes during prophase I of meiosis I. Genetic recombination gives rise to allelic diversity in the newly formed daughter cells. In humans, crossing over produces genetically distinct haploid egg and sperm cells that undergo fertilization to produce unique offspring. Before cell division starts, the germ cell’s chromosome(s) undergo duplication in the S phase of the cell cycle. As the cells enter prophase I,...

Summary

Chronic itch (CI) affects over a third of elderly patients, often stemming from skin conditions or neurological issues. Understanding its causes and associations is key for effective geriatric care.

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Dermatology
  • Neurology

Background:

  • Aging is linked to various health problems, including skin issues and chronic itch (CI).
  • Chronic itch is a common complaint in the elderly with diverse underlying causes.
  • Assessing CI prevalence and clinical features in hospitalized elderly patients is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence and clinical characteristics of chronic itch in elderly patients.
  • To investigate associations between chronic itch and comorbidities, as well as pharmacotherapy.
  • To identify factors influencing itch intensity in this population.

Main Methods:

  • A study was conducted on 153 elderly patients in a geriatric ward.
  • Data collected included itch prevalence, etiology, intensity (using the 4-Item Itch Questionnaire - 4IIQ), comorbidities, and medications.
  • Logistic regression analysis was used to identify correlating factors.

Main Results:

  • Chronic itch affected 35.3% of the elderly subjects.
  • The most common causes were cutaneous conditions (53.7%), mixed etiology (25.9%), and neurological disorders (11.1%).
  • Higher itch intensity (4IIQ scores) was associated with viral hepatitis, elevated serum creatinine, and purpuric lesions. Factors like female sex, atopic dermatitis, immobility, rheumatoid arthritis, and ischemic neurological diseases correlated positively with CI, while certain medications and conditions showed inverse correlations.

Conclusions:

  • Chronic itch is a prevalent and complex issue in the elderly population.
  • It requires a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach for effective management.
  • Identifying associated factors aids in developing targeted treatment strategies for geriatric patients with chronic itch.
