Background:

  • Persistent placoid maculopathy (PPM) is a rare inflammatory condition affecting the choroid and retina.
  • Understanding prognostic factors and functional outcomes is crucial for effective management.

Observation:

  • A study analyzed 68 eyes from 37 patients with PPM, including six new cases.
  • The mean age was 51.8 years, with 70% males.
  • Mean initial and final visual acuities (VA) were 0.52 and 0.49 LogMar, respectively.

Findings:

  • Poor VA was associated with initial VA < 0.2 LogMar, cardiovascular risk factors, autoimmune conditions, choroidal neovascularization, and macular atrophy.
  • Absence of systemic corticosteroid treatment correlated with poorer outcomes (p = 0.03).

Implications:

  • Identifying prognostic factors aids in tailoring treatment and follow-up strategies for PPM.
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs and anti-VEGF injections for neovascularization show promise for improved outcomes.
