A western dietary pattern may increase the risk of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). This study identified four dietary patterns, finding a significant association only with the western pattern, highlighting potential dietary influences on DTC.
Area of Science:
- Endocrinology
- Oncology
- Nutritional Science
Background:
- Differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) is the most prevalent endocrine malignancy globally, with rising incidence rates.
- Dietary patterns represent a modifiable risk factor that may influence DTC development.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between major dietary patterns and the risk of developing DTC.
- To identify specific dietary habits linked to DTC incidence.
Main Methods:
- A case-control study involving 309 participants in northeast Iran.
- Dietary data collected using a validated Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ).
- Factor analysis and logistic regression used to identify patterns and assess associations with DTC risk.
Main Results:
- Four distinct dietary patterns were identified: western, traditional, transitional, and healthy.
- The western dietary pattern showed a significant association with increased odds of DTC (OR = 2.79, 95% CI: 1.01-7.74) after adjusting for confounders.
- No significant association was found between traditional, transitional, or healthy dietary patterns and DTC risk.
Conclusions:
- The findings suggest a potential link between a western dietary pattern and an increased risk of differentiated thyroid cancer.
- Further research is warranted to confirm these findings and elucidate the underlying mechanisms.
