Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effectiveness of audio-visual versus visual-only motor skill modeling presentations.
  • To determine the impact of goal observation versus pattern observation on learning a complex motor skill (basketball jump shot).
  • To evaluate the contribution of auditory information and goal observation to motor performance kinematics.

Main Methods:

  • Forty novice students were randomly assigned to four groups: Pattern/Visual, Pattern/Audio-Visual, Pattern-Goal/Visual, and Pattern-Goal/Audio-Visual.
  • Participants observed either the motor pattern alone or the pattern with its goal outcome.
  • Visual presentations were augmented with sonified elbow angular velocity data in audio-visual conditions.
