A Battery of Motor Tests in a Neonatal Mouse Model of Cerebral Palsy

25.4K
Presented is a concise battery of mouse neonatal motor tests. Using these tests, neonatal motor deficits can be demonstrated in a variety of neonatal motor disorders. By having a standardized set of tests, results from different studies can be compared, allowing for better and accurate reporting between...

Enhancing the Development and Growth of Infant Cerebral Palsy Rats Using Selective Spinal Manipulations

950
This study illustrates the effect of selective spinal manipulation on the growth and development of infant rats with cerebral palsy, emphasizing the specific procedure and standardized protocol. Body weight measurement, Rotarod test, Foot-fault score, other behavioral tests, and growth hormone detection were performed to evaluate the protocol.

Repeated Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Combined with Action Observation Training in Children with Spastic Cerebral Palsy

1.8K
Children with spastic cerebral palsy (SCP) have limb spasticity, movement disorders, and abnormal posture due to injury to the cerebral cortex motor area, resulting in inability to stand and walk normally. Therefore, alleviating limb spasticity and enhancing gross motor function in children with SCP have become important therapeutic goals.

Calculating Heart Rate Variability from ECG Data from Youth with Cerebral Palsy During Active Video Game Sessions

20.4K
This protocol describes a method for calculating Heart Rate Variability (HRV) from electrocardiogram (ECG) waveforms. Waveforms from continuous heart rate (HR) recordings during active video game (AVG) sessions were used to measure the aerobic performance of youth with cerebral palsy...

Event-related Potentials During Target-response Tasks to Study Cognitive Processes of Upper Limb Use in Children with Unilateral Cerebral Palsy

12.6K
Several children with unilateral Cerebral Palsy seem to disregard the preserved capacity of their affected upper limb. This Developmental Disregard is extensively described in the literature but the involved cognitive processes have not been studied. To study underlying cognitive factors of upper limb control, an event-related potential protocol was developed.

Summary

Nursing plays a vital role in managing urinary issues in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Early detection of urinary tract infections is crucial before initiating toilet training programs for improved independence.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Urology
  • Neurology
  • Nursing Care

Background:

  • Cerebral palsy (CP) often presents complex urological challenges in children.
  • Effective management requires understanding the interplay between neurological conditions and urinary function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate common urological consultation reasons in children with CP.
  • To define the role of nursing in pediatric urological care for CP patients.
  • To explore the link between urinary tract infections (UTIs) in children with CP and their functional independence.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analytical observational study.
  • Reviewed clinical records of 47 pediatric patients diagnosed with cerebral palsy (ages 2-16).
  • Patients were selected via simple randomization from a specialized outpatient clinic in northern Mexico.

Main Results:

  • Key reasons for urological consultation in children with CP, often identified by nursing, include UTIs, phimosis, undescended testes, cryptorchidism, hypogonadism, overactive bladder, and hypospadias.
  • A significant correlation was found between urinary infections in children with CP and their level of urinary sphincter control, impacting independence.

Conclusions:

  • Nursing staff are instrumental in the diagnosis, timely referral, and monitoring of urinary disorders in children with CP.
  • Toilet training programs for children with CP should only commence after ruling out underlying urinary tract infections.
