    Summary

    Thymosin fraction V can block the activity of suppressor cells, which are immune cells that reduce immune responses. This immune-modulating effect is more significant when thymosin targets the effector phase of suppressor cell activity.

    Background:

    • Suppressor cells play a critical role in regulating immune responses.
    • Understanding the induction and function of suppressor cells is crucial for immune modulation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of thymosin fraction V on suppressor cell induction and function.
    • To determine if thymosin fraction V can modulate immune responses mediated by suppressor cells.

    Main Methods:

    • Human peripheral blood lymphocytes were used to induce suppressor cells in vitro using Concanavalin A (Con. A).
    • Suppressor cell function was assessed through mitogen stimulation (phytohemagglutinin and Con. A) and mixed lymphocyte culture (MLC).

    • Thymosin fraction V significantly inhibited the effector phase of suppressor cell activity.
    • The inhibitory effect of thymosin fraction V was more pronounced on the effector phase than the induction phase.
    • A combined presence of thymosin fraction V during both induction and effector phases resulted in an additive inhibitory effect.

    • Thymosin fraction V demonstrates potent immunomodulatory capabilities by interfering with suppressor cell function.
    • The findings suggest thymosin fraction V as a potential therapeutic agent for conditions involving excessive immune suppression.
