Reproductive risk to maternal mental health: international perspectives

Despite the emphasis placed, in international comparisons of obstetric management, on the perinatal mortality rate as a measure of excellence of care (or otherwise), there has been relatively little discussion of the impact of birth on maternal mental health. When thinking about this issue, we need to consider both the mental state of the mother during the antenatal period as well as the subsequent impact of the birth on her mood and risk of major mental illness. According to the authors contributing to the theme discussed here, that risk is much higher than we might have predicted, in diverse communities in Pakistan, Nigeria and India. None of these communities has access to the professional support services that might ameliorate the consequences of reproductive risk.

Stress and Mental Health

Chronic stress profoundly affects mental health, significantly influencing mood, behavior, and overall quality of life. Research closely links chronic stress with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Ongoing exposure to stress can lead to physiological and psychological changes, initiating a cycle of emotional distress and maladaptive coping mechanisms.
Individuals with depression often experience challenges in both their personal and professional...

The mental status exam is a clinical evaluation of emotional, perceptual, and cognitive functioning that spans both the fields of psychiatry and neurology. Developing skill in the psychiatric portions of the examination are important to describe salient aspects of the patient's mental state that may be observed during routine history and/or physical exam. Proficiency in the cognitive portions...

Drosophila Development and Reproduction

One of the many reasons that make Drosophila an extremely valuable organism is that the molecular, cellular, and genetic foundations of development are highly conserved between flies and higher eukaryotes such as humans. Drosophila progress through several developmental stages in a process known as the life cycle and each stage provides a unique platform for developmental research. This video introduces each stage of the Drosophila life cycle and details the physical characteristics and major...
